Committee Descriptions

Aesthetics Committee
This committee is responsible for maintaining the appearances of the building and making decorating decisions as necessary.

Building and Grounds Committee
Building and Grounds is charged with maintaining the physical property owned by the Society. This committee oversees repair and maintenance of the building and grounds, organizes special "clean up" days or events, obtains bids for repairs, acquisitions or additions to the property, and oversees the general landscaping plan of the grounds.

Caring Committee
The Caring Committee is responsible for establishing a system of outreach communication for the congregation; to enhance the awareness of caring services available to the individual and family through the Sunday Service, monthly newsletter, weekly bulletins and committee activity; to assess the need for caring educational services; and to collaborate with the appropriate Society committee to develop, implement and evaluate specific educational programs.

Newsletter
Newsletter Editor has responsibility for development and publication of a monthly newsletter and calendar of the religious and social events, accomplishments of the Society, and other religious news and events of interest. The Newsletter Committee assists the Editor in developing and administering newsletter time lines, procedures and policies.

Growth
This committee is investigating the need for growth in the UUSBHC congregation.  This committee is also exploring what it takes to grow the membership as well as the potential implications of having a larger community.

Finance Committee
The purpose of the Finance Committee is to manage the congregation’s financial resources, raise funds needed to finance the operating budget of the Society, to raise and maintain the funds needed to acquire, maintain and expand the property and investments of the Society, and to ensure the financial stability of the Society.

Green Sanctuary Committee
The Green Sanctuary Committee has responsibility to develop a comprehensive program to address environmental awareness within our congregation. Members of the committee will reflect all aspects of the congregational life, including adult and children’s education, worship, communications, buildings and grounds, finance, social justice, and any other areas of the congregation. The Green Sanctuary Committee provides a framework for the congregation to gain a greater understanding of the need for individual and collective action in addressing environmental issues.

Canvass Committee
Canvass Committee is responsible for developing and implementing the Every Member Canvass of the Society.

Fundraising Committee
The purpose of the Fundraising Committee is to develop, implement and coordinate special fundraising events and activities of the Society.

Outreach Committee
The Outreach Committee's responsibility is to greet visitors on Sunday mornings, welcome and introduce new members and visitors to the congregation, maintain a current membership directory, and arrange orientation sessions for new and prospective members. This committee will also be responsible for information regarding public relations.

Religious Education

Adult Religious Exploration
The Adult RE has responsibility for organizing and/or coordinating study and discussion groups for adult members of the congregation. Resources are U.U.A. curricula, self generated ideas, requests from Society members and friends.

Children's Religious Exploration
Children's RE has responsibility to identify, develop and coordinate curricula and schedule teachers for the children's religious exploration classes. This committee promotes the role of religious exploration by publicizing the activities of the youth in the congregation. It plans and implements other activities designed to enhance spiritual growth (e.g. "Coming of Age" and "Youth Religious Unitarian Universalists-YRUU.), the participation of children and youth in intergenerational worship services of the Society, and through youth involvement in District and Denominational activities.

Social Action Committee
The Social Action Committee has responsibility to educate the congregation and community members about social issues; to develop a plan of action on social problems; and to translate our UU principles into action. This committee initiates topics for study and action in an attempt to involve the congregation in areas of social concern.

Sunday Service Committee

Program Committee
The Program Committee has responsibility to plan and conduct Sunday morning services on designated Sunday(s) of each month. The committee works in union with the Minister to satisfy the diverse religious needs and to enhance spiritual growth within the congregation.

Music Committee
The Music Committee has responsibility to arrange for special music for the Sunday morning Service; to convene and maintain a congregational choir; and to identify, purchase and maintain music resources and equipment of the Society. The committee works in conjunction with the Minister and the Program Committee to coordinate musical selections, musical accompaniment, and to organize the choirs participation in designated Sunday services.

Hospitality Committee
The Hospitality Committee has responsibility for arranging with members of the congregation to provide refreshments and making coffee for the Fellowship Hour following the weekly Sunday service.

Advisory

Committee on Ministry
The Committee on Ministry is responsible for the strengthening of the quality of ministry within the Society. The committee participates in setting goals and priorities of the ministry with the Executive Board; reviews and evaluates the status of the ministry (both professional and volunteer), facilitates an open dialogue among the members of the congregation, and performs other duties in support of shared ministry.

Long-Range Planning
The Long-Range Planning Committee has responsibility to define the long range goals and objectives of the congregation. This committee conducts periodic discussion or focus groups among the members of the congregation to formulate an overall plan for achieving short, medium and long-range goals.

Nominating Committee
The Nominating Committee identifies and recruits members of the Society for elective office. The Nominating Committee consists of three members elected by the Congregation in staggered three-year terms. The Nominating Committee presents a nomination slate of officers for vote at the congregation's Annual Meeting.

Archives
The Archivist has responsibility to maintain historical records dating from the Universalist Society of Waterloo in 1873, the Cedar Falls Unitarian Fellowship, and the present Unitarian Universalist Society of Black Hawk County.
